Japanese Language Lessons and Hafu/Nikkei Culture in Hawaii
I can come to your home with my service animal, or we can meet at a cafe or coworking space in Honolulu. Lessons with kids are best conducted in your home, but I have done them in Starbucks as well. I will travel within Kapolei to Kahala Mall to Kaneohe without a travel fee. TRIAL LESSONS ARE $45, prepaid for a 90-minute session. All forms of payment are accepted.

I lived in Japan for 3 years, immersing myself in Japanese culture while teaching English and working at a Japanese restaurant. During my time in Tokyo, the largest city in the world, I had the chance to teach students of all ages, from 0 to 90. My experience included working with corporate business clients and engaging in English copywriting in the fashion industry. Since relocating to Hawaii in 2019, I have transitioned to teaching the Japanese language to English speakers in Honolulu. I also spent 3 years substitute teaching for the state of Hawaii where I did have the pleasure of teaching high school level Japanese at Farrington and Campbell High Schools. I have conducted 1-1 lessons with individuals, siblings, a married couple, and military personnel. Originally, I am from California.

The days of sending your kids to rigorous language schools to write Japanese characters 1000 times are hopefully over! In both the US and Japan, parents are recognizing that the best way to teach kids the Japanese language is at a pace that THEY want to learn. While Japanese students study English rigorously, they often struggle to hold even basic conversations in adulthood. Positive exposure to one's own culture and language is the key, and I can attest to achieving my lifelong dream of living and working in Tokyo which started when I started my language journey at age 12. I spent the summer with an aunt in Osaka and vowed to return for DECADES before I finally did.
Growing up with a Japanese native mother should lead to an automatically bilingual child right? Chigaimasu. (Wrong). Growing up with a Japanese native mother should lead to an automatically bilingual child right? Chigaimasu. (Wrong). If the parents are committed to teaching the language not just playing Japanese dramas on television in the background. Some parents speak and kids will respond in English, but this leads to a half bilingual who can't speak to anyone in the listening only language. It does make learning things a little easier of course, sometimes instinctual sometimes recessed memory. I can coach heritage learners on their journey to reclaim heritage and fluency as I was and AM on the same journey.
